Description:
Through songs, music, toys, simple instruments and loving playtime between you and your child, Kindermusik Sign & Sing shows you many signs your child can use to communicate with you.
Using research-proven methods shown to speed language development in hearing children, you'll see how sign language can ease frustration and enhance long-term learning abilities for your child.
Hearing children who know signs, learn language almost twice as fast. As early as 11-14 months old, hearing children exposed to sign language put little sentences together faster than non-signing children, who do not begin to combine words into short sentences, such as "Da-da car" until the average age of 20 months.
Study conducted by Dr. Michelle Anthony and Dr. Reyna Lindert, Signing Smart program founders.

This class becomes a multi-layered learning environment with the older children ready to show the little ones how it's done and the younger ones eager to learn. During each lesson, you will be introduced to basic musical concepts, and you will have the instruments, and the structured free time to put those concepts into play. Your children will listen to instruments and to each other, learn from their peers and older children, and enjoy music and movement. All the activities encourage discovery and exploration and foster sharing and social skills too. In this special place for musical, social and emotional learning, your children will strengthen their ties with each other and with you—and they'll start developing the skills they'll need in school and on the neighborhood playground.

Family Time is a perfect choice if you find yourself juggling several activities and schedules throughout the week. Here, There, Everywhere
Movin' and Groovin'
Movin' & Groovin' is a romping, rolling, stretching good time for the whole family. This unit will explore lots of different ways to move - high and low, fast and slow, zigzag, curvy and more. Family members will chug around the classroom like trains, clip-clop like horses and roll over like puppy dogs.
The Home Materials include: two CDs with music from class; Sing, Play & Grow! a family guide with musical fun, activities and information about child development, as well as fun facts about the songs enjoyed in class; two sensory balls; two Jellybean Band books with activity pages, comic strips about the band and stories-Can You Catch Me? and Put Your Left Paw In.
Make Way for Music
Families will sing, dance and move their way through an exploration of several elements of music: beat and rhythm, concepts and contrasts (such as staccato and legato, high and low, the major scale, and arpeggios), the human voice, instrument families and ensemble. They'll engage in developmentally appropriate activities that the whole family can enjoy together, including fingerplays, songs, circle dances, story time and family jam.
The Home Materials include: two CDs with music from class; Sing, Play & Grow! a family guide with musical fun, activities and information about child development, as well as fun facts about the songs enjoyed in class; two fingerdrums; two children's storybooks (Drum Circle and Animals on Parade) and an instrument-matching board game.
Our Kind of Day
Our Kind of Day features music and activities which involve the five things that happen around your house: playtime, mealtime, clean-up time, bath time and nighttime.

Here, There, Everywhere
The five sub-themes center around different family outings: a visit with a friend, an outing at the park, a trip to the city, an afternoon at the aquarium and a day on the farm. The story Flip-Flap, Sugar Snap! is all about moving like animals and Jingle-Jangle Tambourine is about following a girl who has lost her tambourine during the day's outings (to the very same places visited in the curriculum - what a coincidence!) and ends up finding it at home at the end of the story.

Class Description: Kindermusik PLAYDATES!
CLICK HERE FOR CURRENT SCHEDULE OF PLAYDATES
A Kindermusik Playdate is a single Kindermusik class with all the music and movement families love in a typical Kindermusik semester. This is NOT a Sign & Sing class but rather a more typical Kindermusik class (though I often add lots of signs in for fun!) Each class is 45 minutes, and includes music and an instrument OR book for your child to take home.
PLAYDATES give the busy mom (dad, grandparent or nanny) the Kindermusik experience when they simply can't schedule the next 5-10 weeks! It's also a great way to try out a Kindermusik class with a low cost and little obligation.
How much do PLAYDATES cost?
Each Kindermusik Play Date is $15 per child or $20 per family (with only one take home materials pack per family—arrangements can be made if you would like an extra instrument). Each family will receive a 10-song download card to Kindermusik's digital music website and a fun musical prop (ie: egg shaker, bells etc.)!
Babies under 6 months are FREE when accompanying a sibling. Register for any Play Date by calling 503.754.8776 or by email shira@tinytalkersportland.com.
When are PLAYDATES?
2-3 PLAYDATES are offered each month, including evenings and weekends.
Who can come to Kindermusik PLAYDATES?
PLAYDATES are for children, 6 months to 5 years old. All children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Why Kindermusik?
Kindermusik International has more than 30 years of experience and is the world's leading age appropriate creator of early childhood music and movement programs creating curricula based on new and proven research in child development from birth to age seven.
- Kindermusik is based on the beliefs that:
- every child is musical.
- every parent is the child's most important teacher.
- the home is the most important place for learning to take root and grow.
- music nurtures a child's cognitive, emotional, social, language, and physical development.
With the caring guidance of a trained and licensed Kindermusik educator, your child can grow without pressure to perform, only encouragement to explore, express, and discover. Parents and their children are led through joyful activities, using music and movement to nurture skills in the whole child: cognitive, physical, social, emotional and language. Parents learn more about their child's unique developmental process and the shared learning experience creates a unique bond as the child associates learning with fun, musical play.
By introducing music into a child's life at a young age it will enhance the child's future math, science, language, and reading skills. The benefits of music education are important to a child's development.
The learning process continues at home, guided by award-winning books, CDs, games and instruments.
- Movement and dance activities improve coordination and balance.
- One-on-one parent and child interaction nurtures self-esteem.
- Music-making and music listening activities develop self-discipline, as well as critical and creative thinking skills.
Nowhere else is learning this much fun, and no other experience offers more ways for children to grow! Together, you'll share the wonder of learning through music.

What Will I do In Class And Why?
Sign & Sing
Family Time
Adventures
SINGING fosters the development of your child's most important instrument, the voice, through vocal exploration, songs, and chants.
MOVING develops body awareness, coordination, and spatial relationships through synchronized movement, creative movement, and simple dances.
PLAYING introduces a variety of musical timbres with percussion instruments such as rhythm sticks, jingle bells, drums, resonator bars, and simple instruments.
CREATING stimulates your child's imagination and encourages new exploration with sound and movement.
PATTERNING boosts your child's ability to think musically through the integration of basic rhythmic and tonal language.
LISTENING cultivates your child's heightened attentiveness to sound discrimination and fine tunes the skill of attentive listening for future use in school and for the rest of their life.
EXPLORING timbre, dynamics, tempo, and pitch lays the foundation for conceptualization of the elements of music.
Why Are Home Materials Required?
Added Value To Your Class
Kindermusik is much more than a weekly class and the Home Materials you receive are just the tools you need to continue that one-of-a-kind experience together as a family. While we plant the seeds of learning through music in the classroom, you will use the Home Resources at home to cultivate lifelong learning.
Family involvement in your child's learning is a fundamental cornerstone of the Kindermusik philosophy because we believe the parent is the child's most important teacher and the home is the most important place for a child's learning to take root and grow. Families should think of their Kindermusik class as the springboard for a week's worth of play and idea development. In this way you are getting so much more value out of your class. Instead of it being a once a week class, you have an opportunity to recreate the fun with your child at home! This is particularly valuable for the working parent who isn't able to attend the class with their child.
The home materials are to Kindermusik what lesson books and instrument are to formal lessons, or shoes and leotards are to dance class - an essential part of full participation in the class as a whole.

Children are innately drawn to music…and why shouldn't they be? They have been listening to the rhythm and melody of their mother's voice since the fourth month after conception.

- Music awakens and stimulates neural pathways in the brain that are associated with higher forms of intelligence, such as abstract thinking, empathy, mathematics and science.
- Music's melodic and rhythmic patterns provide exercise for the brain and help develop memory. Remember singing the ABC song to learn your ABC's? Studying music helps children establish good listening habits, which are essential for achievement in school.
- Overall, music activities are perfect for child development. Music immerses the child in language, evokes movement, stimulates the brain and fosters physical coordination- all in a group setting that builds community- a holistic experience.

Is my BABY really ready for Music Education?
For lap babies, crawlers and walkers, our parent-infant bonding activities include singing, listening, instrument play, literature and creative movement. Infants are ready to listen and be moved to music from the moment they are born. Infants exposed to music from the earliest age will begin to respond as early as eight weeks and will demonstrate musical preferences as early as six months. We know from experience in Kindermusik classes that infants will bounce to a steady beat as early as six months. While responding to music, infants are stimulating development in all areas of the brain. Babies exhibit growth in language and patterns of speech as well as emotional bonding, social and physical development. Musical activities also stimulate development in the areas of the brain used in mathematics.
